Anemia is defined as a decrease in red blood cell (RBC) mass. However, direct measurement of RBC mass is expensive and time consuming. For this reason, anemia is measured via an RBC count, hemoglobin concentration, and hematocrit concentration. Anemia is a symptom of another problem, so the major treatment will aim to correct the underlying problem or disease state.
