It is important to document and receive appropriate reimbursement for the challenging and time-consuming care of patients with diabetes. Coding and billing are skills the NP must understand along with clinical skills, but these need not be overwhelming. This article will present some guidelines for accurate and efficient coding and billing for patients with diabetes, including easy-to-use guidelines. This is not intended as a complete lesson in coding, but will help build coding skills for the NP.

Tom Bartol is a Nurse Practitioner at Richmond Area Health Center, HealthReach Community Health Centers, and lives in Manchester, Maine. He was also the Keynote Speaker at the 2005 National Conference for Nurse Practitioners and is well known for his expertise on the subject of diabetes.
