The addition of plate fixation has increased the initial stability and extended the indications. The current systems that provide a rigid screw-plate interface obviate the need to penetrate the posterior vertebral cortex in most circumstances. The number of patients requiring both an anterior and posterior stabilization has also been decreased. © Williams & Wilkins 1994. All Rights Reserved.
