The Single-Person Lateral Decubitus Ankle Sling Fracture Reduction Technique

Abstract

Ankle fractures are common pathologies encountered in the emergency department. Reduction of ankle fractures can be a challenging task to perform alone and can place medical personnel in mechanically disadvantageous positions. In addition, body weight and awkward lifting are leading preventable causes of musculoskeletal injuries among medical staff. The single-person lateral decubitus ankle sling fracture reduction method described is a simple and reproducible technique that utilizes the classic principles described by Dr Quigley in 1959. This technique optimizes patient positioning, utilizes gravity, and incorporates a stable ankle sling. This also incorporates a relaxed patient position to promote a successful ankle fracture reduction.
