First metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis is a useful tool in foot and ankle surgery with many indications. There have been numerous modalities described for both fixation and bone preparation. We intend to describe in detail a technique of first metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis utilizing conical reaming followed by dual crossed compression screw fixation. In addition, we will review the history, outcomes, biomechanical data, and complications of this technique of fixation and bone preparation along with others.
