In Brief:
We performed a meta-analysis of 7 randomized controlled trials comparing fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and pefloxacin were used in 3, 3, and 1 study, respectively) with various β-lactams for the treatment of patients with osteomyelitis. There was no difference in treatment success, bacteriological success, superinfections, relapses, or adverse events between the compared regimens. The value of fluoroquinolones for the treatment of osteomyelitis lies in the fact that they can be administered in an outpatient setting.
