In Brief:
Recently, interest in cell transplantation therapy for disc degeneration has been growing and various different cell types have been examined as possible donor cells for disc transplantation therapy. In addition, the establishment of a nucleus pulposus cell line, temporarily immortalized using a recombinant Simian Virus 40 adenovirus vector, has been reported. In this study, the effects of transplantation of this cell line into a disc degeneration model in rabbits were examined. This article discusses the possibility of the immortalized human nucleus pulposus cell line as an alternative cell source for cell transplantation therapy for intervertebral disc degeneration.
