Reviewer's Expert Opinion:
Description: This is a major revision of the 2000 version of this book, titled Surgery of the Liver and Biliary Tract. As the title of this edition reveals, the editors have added quite a few chapters related to pancreatic diseases and surgeries. Purpose: The book is dedicated to the development of surgery of the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas as a specialty and is intended to cover the whole spectrum of surgical diseases and surgical treatments of these organs in depth. The authors extensively reviewed the most recent developments in the field, which makes this book a valuable resource for specialists. Audience: According to the editors, the intended audiences are not only trainees and established surgeons, but also other physicians in related disciplines who are concerned with the management of these diseases. The editors and authors are well-known leading experts in the field, and the book serves as a valuable reference for all of the audiences. Features: The book covers not only diseases and surgeries of the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas, but also anatomy, physiology, and diagnostic techniques. Notably, the authors contributed different approaches and opinions on the same disease, allowing readers the opportunity to assess alternative approaches. The book comes with a CD that contains video clips of the procedures which help users understand the details. Assessment: This well-written book and its extensive review of the literature make it a comprehensive reference for surgical specialists and physicians in related disciplines. The addition of the pancreas chapters makes it even more comprehensive in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. Different opinions on the same disease may cause beginners some confusion, but specialists in this field will reap major benefits from this one-of-a-kind book.
