Reviewer’s Expert Opinion:
Description: This 22nd edition of the classic Cecil text is greatly augmented by its CD-ROM and online components. The book continues in its tradition of being comprehensive yet readable. Purpose: The authors seek to continue in their mission of providing the most up-to-date medical information in the organ-based physiological format that has made the book one of the most widely used medical student texts in history. In its comprehensive yet practical approach, this work exceeds its predecessors. Audience: All practitioners will find this book to be a ready reference as well as an excellent review. Students will continue to depend on it. Underlined and noted, it will be on the shelves of many future physicians. The authors are once again some of the most eminent physicians and educators in the world. Features: In an organ system format, the book lays out the pathophysiological basis of internal medicine diagnosis and treatment. Chapter organization is concise, yet complete. The book is in full color, with its trademark algorithms color coded to provide ready access to testing principles, treatments, and other studies based on specific colored boxes. The book is well illustrated with numerous summarizing tables and diagrams. The only shortcoming is a small print size that may be somewhat problematic for older readers. Assessment: This continues to be one of the most outstanding textbooks of medicine ever written, and this edition could well be the best yet. The online resources available to the book’s owner greatly amplify the text’s usefulness. I’m not sure if a single book could ever be described as so comprehensive as to be the only medicine text a physician might need, but this work indeed comes close.
