Reviewer's Expert Opinion:

This is the seventh edition of a well known surgical text describing the approach to clinical problems in general surgery.

Provided is a compilation of approaches to diseases and clinical problems faced by general surgeons, organized according to organ system.

Postgraduate trainees in general surgery and surgeons in practice are the stated audience. The editor heads an international group of authors, many of whom are acknowledged experts in the topics they present.

Clinical topics are discussed and organized according to individual organs beginning with the esophagus and proceeding through the gastrointestinal tract, followed by the solid organs in the abdomen, breast and endocrine considerations, vascular diseases, trauma, surgical critical care, and minimally invasive techniques. Chapters are succinct and clearly written. Only a small number of references are provided, but they represent important primary sources or useful secondary works. Many references date to within one to two years of publication. Chapters include black-and-white photographs, line drawings, and tables. Illustrations reproduce with good, though not outstanding, quality. The book is divided into approximately 250 chapters. The table of contents includes chapter, title and authorship, while a 50-page index with separate citations for figures and tables concludes.

This book maintains and builds on the quality of previous editions by including an increased number of illustrations. These contribute to both the size and quality of this work. Recent developments in minimally invasive surgery also receive increased attention. This remains the standard text for surgical trainees preparing for oral board exams.
