Just as the private sector has emerged as the predominant force for greater efficiency in the delivery of health care services, so too is the private sector gaining importance as a source of quality oversight strategies. Public reliance on private sector quality assurance efforts is being fueled by such developments as the growth in the number and diversity of private health care accrediting agencies, and the increase in consumer and purchaser-driven demands for comparative information about the quality of health care providers.
