Black History Month

  • Creator:   PRS Global Open
  • Updated:   8/29/2023
  • Contains:  25 items

In acknowledgement and celebration of Black History Month, PRS Global Open is highlighting valuable contributions by our Black colleagues and articles that discuss diversity in plastic surgery. These scholastic pursuits span the breadth of our discipline from basic science to clinical research and from hand surgery to aesthetic surgery (with everything in between). As we have, and continue to endure, a racial reawakening in this country, health care disparities along racial and ethnic lines are again on the forefronts of our minds.

We stand with, and in full support of, our Black colleagues, in hopes of creating a plastic surgery workforce more reflective of the diverse patient population which we are honored to treat. Improving equity in provision of care, research pursuits, and the education of the next generation of plastic and reconstructive surgeons is dependent on it. We are excited that the articles are open access, and therefore free to be read by anyone, anywhere on PRSGlobalOpen.com.

Sincerely,

Paris D. Butler, MD, MPH, FACS Former Chair, Diversity Committee of American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS)

  • Creator:   PRS Global Open
  • Updated:   9/25/2023
  • Contains:  22 items

In acknowledgment of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Breast Reconstuction Awareness Day, PRS Global Open is highlighting various breast-related articles published.

Breast remains one of the most vibrant sections, with a large volume of submissions and excellent papers that cover all aspects of aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery. Based on citation metrics and impact to the field, we have chosen our Top breast papers from PRS Global Open since 2013. This collection of articles is recognized in how they cover many of the latest advances and trends in breast surgery. Topics include DIEP flap breast reconstruction, prepectoral breast reconstruction, outcomes in oncoplastic surgery and the neurotization of flaps. It also includes topics such as dermal matrices, breast implant surfaces and other clinically-impactful adjunctive technologies. that attempt to improve outcomes and efficiency of breast reconstruction.

We stand in support of all our breast cancer patients and encourage the continued submission of breast related articles to PRS Global Open. It is publications like these that allow us to raise the bar when it comes to reconstructive standards and this invariably will lead to improved outcomes and better patient satisfaction.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

  • Creator:   PRS Global Open
  • Updated:   10/24/2022
  • Contains:  14 items
November hosts both Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance, and PRS Global Open is proud to support these events by highlighting articles published in our journal which focus on the health of transgender and nonbinary people.

PRS Global Open works to increase the health and safety of transgender and nonbinary patients by publishing the highest quality papers on the many aspects of gender affirming surgery. The articles selected reflect the impressive array of research on gender affirming care published in PRS Global Open since 2019. This compendium includes procedural considerations, technical innovations, complication management, as well as the dimensions of social healthcare relevant to the transgender community, such as insurance coverage and perceptions of gender affirmation. It is this synthesis of a surgeons’ expertise with the patient experience that elevates clinical care.

Gender affirming surgery is a dynamic and expanding field. While access to life-saving, life-affirming reconstructive surgery is only one aspect of the wellbeing of transgender and nonbinary populations, it is the area where the field of plastic surgery can most directly advocate for patients. PRS Global Open honors the transgender and nonbinary lives lost, and stands strong in its commitment to publishing articles which expand and improve the quality of gender affirming surgical care.

How will YOU Face the Case?

To engage readers around plastic surgery case reports from around the globe and enact the mission of PRS Global Open, we challenge surgeons and residents to "Face the Case" on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

First, we post video of one of our international Resident Ambassadors presenting the patient and problems from a PRS Global Open case report. They then present two treatment options. Using comments on Instagram and Facebook and polls on Twitter and Instagram Stories, readers vote on how they’d proceed.

Following the vote, we post video of an Associate Editor or other global plasic surgery expert discussing the poll results, how they’d treat the patient, and what the authors ultimately did. Our International hosts and guests help us tap into the global plastic surgery network on social media.

A final video combining the presentation, polling, and analysis links to the paper; a fitting conclusion to this interactive, multi-media campaign utilizing social media to encourage engagement and discussion around plastic surgery case reports, which in helps us meet our mission statement: improving plastic surgery education article-by-article. A collection of these wrap-up videos are paired with their respective case reports in this collection.
