The Point-of-Care Coordinator Training Program—Standardizing Point-of-Care Coordinator Training Globally

Background Point-of-care coordinators (POCCs) are responsible for implementing national and international standards, and ensuring their staff is trained to the highest possible level to ensure high-quality patient care and safety. Few well-structured face-to-face training programs exist for POCCs in local languages. This article outlines a modular training program for POCCs that can help to standardize their knowledge and skill sets globally.

Methods The POCC Training Program is a self-contained course aimed at POCCs who are new or relatively new to their role and is accessible to non–English-speaking POCCs. The contents of this course reflect what is needed for POCCs to meet the ISO 22870 standard when inspected by a notified accrediting body and also reflect the standards of other regulatory bodies. It has been written and structured for endorsement by both international and local accreditation bodies.

The course includes both “classroom-style” teaching and interactive sessions. It comprises 8 core modules—which are completed in order—and 7 practical skills workshops. The modular structure of the POCC Training Program enables the facilitation of a variety of meeting formats in different environments to meet the needs of POCCs globally.

Conclusions There is a need to standardize POCC training and skill sets globally. The Roche-sponsored POCC Training Program addresses this need. People completing the POCC Training Program are participants in the first “global course” on point of care. It is hoped that such a program points toward the future direction of POCC education.
