Read the urgent safety advisory issued by the Multi-Society Task Force for Safety in Gluteal Fat Grafting for crucial information on the procedure.
The mortality rate from gluteal fat grafting is unacceptable. Despite efforts at defining “safety zones” and “angles” of cannula direction, the crux of the problem appears to be the depth of cannula penetration and not the angle of insertion nor the zone of the gluteus muscle injected. Dynamic cadaver studies demonstrate that fat placed just beneath the gluteus maximus fascia will migrate deep to the sub muscular space with the potential for venous tear and pulmonary fat embolism. A call is hereby made for a halt to fat grafting beneath the fascia of the gluteus muscle.
