Aims & Objectives:

For many junior doctors and nurses, the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit is a foreign environment in which they are confronted with a variety of new and unfamiliar procedures. Overcoming this unfamiliarity with a video library of procedures prompted our creation of ‘Emergency Procedures in Paediatric Intensive Care’ (EPPIC) a video library.

Methods

We created an initial list of procedures, based on surveys of the multidisciplinary team, of essential procedures taking place in Paediatric Intensive Care Units. Scripts and storyboards were developed for each procedure, based on clinical guidelines and expert opinion on best practice. We also took the opportunity to integrate the National Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures1, by incorporating ‘stop moments’ throughout the procedures.

All procedures were performed by senior members of staff, with full consent obtained prior to filming. The videos were then narrated, and have been circulated to new staff rotating to our unit.

Feedback on the videos and filming process was obtained from staff and parents using questionnaires.

Results

The library, comprising 20 videos, encompasses a range of medical and nursing procedures. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with staff describing the videos as “a useful resource” and parents describing their involvement as “a brilliant experience”.

Some changes were made to the content of the initial videos, and on-going feedback is being used to inform further revisions

Conclusions

With a multidisciplinary team and the support of parents, we have been able to create a library of educational videos, which has been well-received
