There are a wide range of pathogens that affect the respiratory tract in patients with abnormal immune system; typically this is referred to as pneumonia. In general, these infections can be divided into community‐acquired pathogens and opportunistic pathogens. The clinical presentation and microbiologic causes of pneumonia in the different immunocompromised hosts will be reviewed. Special attention will be paid to the community respiratory viruses, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), and tuberculosis.
