Chronic pancreatitis is defined as a continuing inflammatory disease of the pancreas characterized by irreversible morphologic changes that typically cause pain and/or permanent loss of function in the revised diagnostic criteria for chronic pancreatitis. As autoimmune pancreatitis improves morphologically and functionally with steroid therapy, and obstructive pancreatitis recovers when the obstruction is removed, the revised criteria excluded the two diseases from the definition of chronic pancreatitis and treated them as chronic inflammation of the pancreas. The revised criteria divided chronic pancreatitis etiologically into alcoholic and nonalcoholic chronic pancreatitis. According to the specificity of the diagnostic findings, chronic pancreatitis was diagnosed as definite or probable chronic pancreatitis. To diagnose chronic pancreatitis earlier, the concept of early chronic pancreatitis was defined in the revised criteria. Further prospective study is necessary to verify the revised criteria.
