This video presents a systematic review and meta-analysis which was undertook to assess the strength of the association between psychological predictors and chronic post-surgical pain. The results suggest that state anxiety is the psychological predictor with the highest effect size, followed by catastrophizing, depression and trait anxiety. Mental health, kinesiophobia and self-efficacy had small effect sizes and optimism was not significantly associated with chronic post-surgical pain. These results have implications for the identifications of patients at risk.

Dr. Ceng Luo and Fei Wang unraveled a peripheral target, PKG-I localized in primary afferent nociceptors, which influences central sensitization by enhancing cortical plasticity in the ACC via regulation of BDNF function after nerve injury. Developing analgesic therapeutics against peripheral PKG-I may pave the new way for treatment of neuropathic pain with least side effects.

This video describes a hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a digital health psychological intervention for pediatric chronic pain (WebMAP Mobile). The authors are Tonya Palermo, Rocio de la Vega, Caitlin Murray, Emily Law, and Chuan Zhou. This innovative trial used a stepped wedge cluster RCT design with 8 clinics in the U.S., recruiting 143 youth with chronic pain (ages 10 to 17 years). Effectiveness outcomes included pain intensity, disability, and global impression of change, while Reach, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance were implementation outcomes. Findings demonstrated successful implementation but effectiveness was limited by modest treatment engagement.

Single cell sequencing has revealed new details about diversity of somatosensory neurons. Here we developed a relatively straightforward approach for classifying neurons in tissue sections. We automated the approach using a custom deep-learning algorithm. We then used the approach to explore the significance of neuronal transcriptomic class in the trigeminal system.

This review examined the handling and reporting of rescue and concomitant analgesic use in 265 trials of pharmacotherapy for neuropathic pain or low back pain. Our findings suggest that poorly described procedures and incomplete reporting are likely to hinder the interpretation, critical appraisal, and replication of trial results.

Ample empirical evidence endorses the role of associative learning in pain-related fear acquisition. Nevertheless, research typically focused on self-reported and psychophysiological measures of fear. Avoidance, which is overt behavior preventing the occurrence of an aversive (painful) stimulus, has been largely neglected so far. Therefore, we aimed to fill this gap and developed an operant conditioning procedure for pain-related avoidance behavior.
