Thalamic neurometabolite alterations in patients with knee osteoarthritis before and after total knee replacement

We used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure alterations in brain metabolites in patients with chronic knee pain due to knee osteoarthritis. Changes in neurometabolites were observed before and after total knee replacement, and differences observed between KOA patients and controls. Findings suggest that central nervous system alterations, including the role of glial cell activation and neuroinflammation, contribute to the pathophysiology of knee osteoarthritis.
