Examination of the tear film by means of the slitlamp can reveal anomalies in the lipid layer. These variations may relate to contact lens wear and to ocular symptoms in patients not wearing contact lenses.
A description of these techniques and some examples of the appearance of the lipid layer were presented at the meeting of the International Society for Contact Lens Research, London, England, September 1980. Further observations were presented in the Poster Session at the meeting of the American Academy of Optometry, Orlando, Florida, December 1981.
