Fighting (for Malia)

I enter the room and hear quiet sobs.

The diagnosis is in

I say nothing, and put out my arms,

Wanting to pull the fear out of her.

I will be by your side for the fight, I say

I am scared, she says

I tell her honestly that I do not know how she feels right now, and hug her.

We laugh, and we cry

I educate, she listens, taking in every last detail.

Her family is incredible

So inviting, letting me into their hearts

Her husband and kids—always by her side.

Obstacles keep coming

Future uncertain

Fighting the battles, unable to conquer the war.

Hand in hand, we wage on together.

Still not sure….

Does anyone ever really know?

I am an optimist

And that is my gift to her

I will fight with her until the very end.
