Abstract

(Abstracted from Pediatrics 2017;140(5):e20172695)

Cord blood transplantation provides an array of treatment possibilities, from transplanting hematopoietic stem cells in children to the definitive treatment of certain hematological malignancies, immunodeficiencies, metabolic diseases, and hemoglobinopathies. Cord blood is noninvasively gathered from the placenta of newborn infants that would otherwise be discarded.
