Initial phases of embryonic development have a high requirement for ATP, and evidence shows that oocytes with high ATP levels enhance implantation of the human embryo. Decreased bioenergetic capacity in oocytes has been found to be a primary contributor to declining embryo quality with advancing maternal age or in women with premature ovarian aging.
