Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is not a single disease but a group of highly variable disorders of glucose metabolism. As a group with a common clinical feature, it is the largest group of genetic diseases that afflict mankind. More than 200 mutations have been reported that associate with this disease. Because of this variability in genetic origin, optimal management of the affected individual poses considerable challenges to the clinical and family caregiver.
