To compare three approaches of providing bowel control for patients with recent spinal cord injuries 20 patients were assigned to each type of control: irritant-contact, stimulant, and mechanical. When effectiveness of the three approaches was measured for the time required for evacuation to occur after stimulation, the number of times evacuation did not occur from stimulation, and the number of accidental evacuations, the mechanical approach was found to offer the most effective bowel control during early rehabilitation programs.
