Reducing staff turnover through the implementation of a peer mentoring program

A peer mentoring program was implemented with the oversight of less than one full time-equivalent person and no budget. Staff turnover was less than the comparison group, 2.6% versus 7.9% over a 3-year period. Calculated cost savings was 4.4 million dollars.

Although nurse leaders routinely provide direct patient care less than 50% of the time, this study found that the COVID-19 pandemic decreased compassion satisfaction and increased compassion fatigue among non-direct care nurses and exposed nurse leaders to greater levels of vicarious trauma.
