Or they can click on the link for “Diseases & Conditions,” which also directs readers to a list of infectious and noninfectious diseases. Each disease page provides educational resources that can be used for patient teaching.

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America

According to SHEA's website, the society is dedicated to preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and has been responsible for helping to define best practices in epidemiology for over 30 years. This website has patient education materials, including frequently asked questions about specific HAIs, and numerous white papers on HAI prevention, vaccinations, and infection control. Also available (for purchase and download) are the SHEA pocket guidelines, which are quick reference tools for healthcare professionals.

Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology

APIC's website is divided into sections for consumers and healthcare professionals. Direct patients to the consumer's page, which offers safety resources such as “Infection Prevention and You” brochures and monthly infection prevention alert bulletins.

The healthcare professional's page, Professional Practice, has APIC implementation guides available for download, including the Guide to Infection Prevention in Emergency Medical Services and the Guide to Elimination of Infections in Hemodialysis.
