Rick Howard, MEd, CSCS*D Guest Co-editor–Special Topic Edition for Youth
Welcome to this Special Topic Edition on Youth for the Strength and Conditioning Journal (SCJ). One thing all readers of this edition can relate to is that, at one time, we all were youth. The clientele we train, research, and/or coach either are, or were, youth. Our goal with this special issue is to provide you with research-based practical information on developing competent movers through the application of fundamental movement in the youth population. Readers will recognize the impact on other populations if all youth are not provided multiple opportunities to properly develop mental, physical, and social competence.
It is now widely accepted that children and youth are not simply miniature adults, and this edition provides the reader with peer-reviewed articles from several youth industry leaders on the effects of adult programming imposed on youth, long-term implications if proper training methods for youth are not followed, and recommendations for injury prevention, teaching and coaching fundamental fitness and skills, and mental preparation strategies.
As the guest co-editor, it was my privilege to work with the authors who contributed to this edition as they are not only experts in their area but also leaders in the strength and conditioning community. Thank you to each author, to co-editor Patrick McHenry, and especially to SCJ Editor in Chief, Dr. Jeff Chandler, for his leadership in bringing this issue to fruition. We all feel that this special issue will not only promulgate continued discussion on proper methodology of youth training but also lead to higher-quality practitioners training the fitness enthusiasts and athletes of tomorrow.
