Orly Avitzur, MD, MBA, FAAN

dedicated to improving the field of neurology.”
Dr. Avitzur is a neurologist in part-time practice and president-elect of the AAN. Eleven years ago, she assumed
the role of medical adviser at Consumer Reports and for the past three years, until mid-2018, she served as its
medical director and leading healthcare strategy. A medical writer and associate editor for
Neurology Today, she launched the “In Practice” column in 2001 and since that time has contributed
several hundred stories covering health policy and economics, neurology practice matters, and challenges and
trends affecting the field of neurology.
Her professional interests include health policy and economics, patient/consumer advocacy, and medical education
and communication. She is the current editor-in-chief of
Brain & Life, the AAN patient magazine, which advises readers with neurologic conditions and their
caregivers on how to live their best lives and informs them of current advances in the field of neurology. While
at Consumer Reports she created and wrote the Proactive Patient column counseling consumers how to succeed in
navigating our complex healthcare system, gain the most out of their doctors’ visits, and take charge of the
critical financial side of their healthcare. She was recipient of the 2009 AAN Journalism Fellowship Award,
among other writing awards.
Over the past several years, she has co-directed the leadership course for women at the AAN annual meeting,
served as chair of the Medical Economics and Management Committee and as a member of the AAN Board of Directors.
She is a medical consultant for the New York Rangers and holds academic appointments at Yale University School
of Medicine and New York Medical College.
