Summary:
This review attempts to bring out many of the controversies surrounding temporal lobe epilepsy and its surgical treatment. I hope that the reader will be impressed with both the complexity of the clinical disorder and the gains that have been made in its treatment. Also, it should be apparent that, although a common problem, it is highly complex. The bottom line is that such a complex problem should be treated within a comprehensive epilepsy center where there are personnel trained to deal with the medical, surgical, psychiatric, psychological, vocational, and social issues.
