Previous studies have demonstrated that TERT promoter mutations are positively associated with age and hepatitis C infection, but negatively associated with HBV infection.[17,20] Our results also showed a positive association of TERT promoter mutations with HCV, but not with HBV, with a higher frequency in males. Taken together, TERT promoter mutations are the most frequent genetic alterations observed in HCC. Considering the association of TERT overexpression with TERT promoter mutations, questions have been raised about the change in telomere length with respect to TERT promoter mutations in HCC. However, TERT promoter mutation did not have any effect on the regulation of telomere length.
