The Kidney360 Editorial Training program is a two-year mentoring program designed specifically to provide early-career nephrologists and scientists with the skills to become strong peer reviewers and editors. If you are within five years of completing your subspecialty training or research fellowship, then this program is ideal for you. Each participant will be matched with a mentor who is an Associate Editor of Kidney360.
The mentor will provide guidance and assistance for:
- Honing peer review skills
- Assessing and making editorial decisions
- Learning and understanding the strategy of accepting articles to ensure the goals and objectives of the journal are met
Program Components
Based on shared scientific interests, participants will be assigned to an Associate Editor (AE) who will guide the participant development throughout the program. Participants in the program will receive compensation:
- Receive a $1000 stipend
- Free ASN membership
- Acknowledgement on the Kidney360 website
Participants will take part in all editorial processes, including the editorial review of manuscripts, the development of editorial policy, and the identification of topics for invited manuscripts. The primary role is to participate in the editorial assessment of manuscripts under close supervision of an AE.
Specific Responsibilities Will Include:
- Working with your mentor to collaboratively:
- evaluate new submissions and revisions
- assess reviewer comments and authors response to reviewers
- observe and discuss the editorial decision-making progress
- provide timely review of one to two manuscripts per month as assigned by your mentor
- With the full editorial team, you will:
- contribute to editorial strategy discussions
- suggest at least two topics and potential authors for consideration for Reviews, Perspectives or Debates in Nephrology
- participate in monthly editorial team calls
- Throughout your participation you will also:
- regularly meet with your mentor to discuss your progress
- participate in the journal’s social media programs including Tweetorial preparation
- participate in surveys and other methods providing feedback about the program
- periodically meet with Kidney360 senior leadership to discuss specific topics in the editorial process including:
- discussions around ethical issues associated with peer review
- editorial processes and potential areas of improvement for authors, reviewers and editors
We estimate a time commitment of approximately four to six hours per week. Appointments will be for one year, potentially renewable for a second year. After six months, there will be potential for subject area rotation, according to your area(s) of interest.
Who should apply:
Applicants with interest in either basic science (physiology, pharmacology or pathophysiology), clinical research (observational research and clinical trials), or clinician educators are encouraged to apply. Applicants with interest in and expertise in bioinformatics, data visualization, systems biology and innovative techniques are also encouraged to apply.
