Shared reading with young children is associated with improved language, literacy, and social-emotional outcomes. Shared reading is also believed to enhance parent-child relationships but the extent to which it reduces harsh parenting, an important aspect of the parent-child relationship, is understudied. In this study, we investigated associations between early shared reading and subsequent harsh parenting. We found that early shared reading was consistently associated with less harsh parenting later in the child’s life and that this association partially operated through enhanced child behaviors.
