The New Yorker: The Heroism of Incremental Care

​Here is a thoughtful piece about two contrasting faces of medical care in the United States today. Surgeon and writer Atul Gawande​ contrasts the romance and heroics of interventionist care (well compensated, but reactive and emphemeral) with the slow and steady, relationship-based art of incremental care (inadequately compensated, under-resources, but long-term and nurturing). Dr. Gawande ponders the cost of focusing too much on short-term care, and not enough on long-term care when chronic diseases (not acute illness) have become the major health care needs. New Yorker​
