In this video abstract, the lead author for the study describes the importance of examining the association between television viewing and parent-child shared book reading, given the implications that each of these activities has on children’s developmental outcomes. The results of the study are presented along with recommendations for policy makers and health care providers on how to communicate with parents regarding structuring screen time and shared book reading in the home. The video concludes with a challenge posed to the audience to reflect on their own experiences with these two activities.
