Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a static encephalopathy often associated with epilepsy and abnormalities of speech, vision, and intellect resulting from a defect or lesion of the developing brain. The aim of this study was to determine symptoms of digestive system in CP patients.

Methods: 70 CP patients were examined at University Children's Hospital by paediatric neurologist and gastroenterologist. The data about various gastrointestinal symptoms (GS) was obtained from child's parents and case histories.

Results: The mean age of CP patients was 52.5 mon. (range 8 mon.-13.8 yr.). Spastic diplegia have 32/70 CP patients (45.7%), spastic hemiplegia 15/70 patients (21.4%), spastic quadriplegia 9/70 patients (12.9%), athetoid 6/70 patients (8.6%), mixed form 8/70 patients (11.4%). GS have 29/70 patients (41.4%). Swallowing disorder was most frequent complaint - 15/70 (21.4%). Constipation have 9/70 children (12.9%), recurrent vomiting - 7/70 (10%), regurgitation - 4/70 (5.7%), diarrhea and enuresis nocturna in 3/70 CP patients (4.3%). Encopresis and flatulence were found in one patient. Most often GS were found in spastic quadriplegia 5/9 patients (55.6%). Children with athetoid and mixed forms have GS in 3/6 patients and 4/8 patients respectively. GS in spastic diplegia have 9/32 patients (28.1%).

Conclusions: GS were frequent complaints (41.4%) in CP patients. Most often patients have symptoms from the upper part of digestive system - swallowing disorders (21.4%), recurrent vomiting and regurgitation in 10% and 5.7% respectively. GS were found more often in patients with spastic quadriplegia (55.6%).
