During the 8th Annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress in San Francisco, May 10 to 12, 2006, McKesson Corporation convened an array of stakeholders for a 2-hour roundtable discussion designed to provide a 360-degree perspective on patient safety. Panelists represented the voices of patients and families, researchers, providers and advocacy groups.
This article presents highlights from the roundtable, which was moderated by Susan Dentzer. Drawing on their personal experiences, participants discussed where they see progress being made, the increasing role of patients and families, best practices for disclosure and cultural change, and how the rate of scientific and medical change is driving the need for clinical decision support and other technology.
