Elaine Hu, is a third-year undergraduate student at University of British Columbia (UBC) pursuing her BSc in behavioral neuroscience. She helped coordinate a study validating an online social stress test at the UBC Social Health Laboratory for research on how social stress impacts psychological outcomes. She has contributed previously to research articles at the university level regarding patient knowledge gaps about antithrombotic agents and wellness for patients with rheumatological diseases. Currently, Ms Hu is a co-op student clinical research assistant at the British Columbia (BC) Centre on Substance Use, working on an observational study evaluating injectable opioid agonist therapy treatment programs.
Maryam Shams, BSc, is a senior student pursuing her second BSc in psychology in the mind and brain stream at the University of Victoria, where she earned her first BSc in neurobiology. She has previously worked with the BC Cancer Agency, BC Alzheimer's Society, and Vancouver Brain Injury Association, where she had the chance to explore various patient care settings and observe different clinical and outpatient environments. In her current position as a pharmacy assistant, she encounters many issues regarding patient satisfaction and care quality, which she believes can be addressed to promote better care and lower distress for individuals experiencing various health problems.
Daniel Shirvani, is a third-year undergraduate student studying pharmacology at UBC. Currently, Mr Shirvani is working with the Personalized Oncogenomics Group at the Genome Sciences Centre to develop a predictive model for cancer biopsy success using tumor data from more than 500 patient biopsies with sequencing data. Additionally, as part of his deep interest in health care systems, Mr Shirvani founded an organization named Leftindust that develops interoperable electronic medical records, where they seek to solve the issue of patient data transfer in health care.
Maziar Badii, MD, MHSc, FRCPC, is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, at UBC. He holds a master's degree in health care and epidemiology and is a recipient of training awards from the Arthritis Society of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr Badii has more than 20 years of experience in clinical rheumatology practice at the Vancouver General Hospital and the Artus Health Centre in Vancouver, Canada. Dr Badii cofounded and helped oversee the operations of a large rheumatology outpatient infusion clinic that has been in operation for more than 15 years. He is currently the medical and scientific director of the Canadian Rheumatology Infusion Services in Vancouver. Dr Badii is a research scientist affiliated with the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada and has served as president of the Northwest Rheumatism Society in the past.
