Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation in the U.S. Nurses are in a strategic position to educate about FAS and other common, preventable birth defects.

Linda N. Coakley, EdD, RN, is Assistant Professor of Nursing at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Kentucky. Her doctoral dissertation addressed the prevention of fetal alcohol syndrome. Linda has 36 years of nursing expertise and volunteers at the Nashville Union Rescue Mission Clinics as a nurse practitioner.
