ABSTRACT: Faith community nursing (FCN) is an important healthcare delivery system for individuals, families, and communities. Determinants are factors that might influence FCN care. A literature review isolated eight determinants that influence practice; however, there are no clear causal relationships linking specific determinants to specific practice changes. Research is needed to assess how determinants influence practice and outcomes, and provide evidence-based solutions to isolate and manage determinants. A Conceptual Model of FCN, Theoretical Definitions and a Diagram of Determinants of FCN Practice are provided.

What influences how faith community nurses practice?

Deborah Jean Ziebarth, MSN, ED, RN PhDc, is Manager of Research and Special Projects at the Church Health Center, Memphis, TN, and a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She has 30 years of experience in nursing; 8 as an FCN and 12 as a manager of FCN programs.
