It's Time to Start Something New and Trust in the Magic of New Beginnings

The words of German theologian and philosopher, Meister Eckhart, tend to sum up the sentiments of many at the Journal of Physical Therapy Education, “And then suddenly you know: It's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.” That is because over the last 90 days, something new has landed in our world—a much welcomed change with the recent announcement of our new Journal of Physical Therapy Education publisher, Wolters Kluwer (WK)-Lippincott Williams and Wilkins.

Wolters Kluwer took over all publishing duties of Journal of Physical Therapy Education with issue 4 of 2017. Those of you who subscribe to the journal welcomed a rather thick, well-packed issue again, addressing contemporary issues of physical therapy education. For those of you who have historically anticipated that quarterly process associated with manually turning those pages in eagerness of what awaits in the next article, the change to our new publisher will mean that you must now subscribe (for a small additional fee) for your paper copy to be delivered to your door each quarter. Yes, with something new you must trust the magic of new beginnings. Beginning with the next issue, all Journal of Physical Therapy Education publication will transition to digital format for all standard subscribers. With this start of something new in the digital age, many added benefits come for both our readers and authors.

Because of the recent digitization of the journal, authors and readers will soon realize an added benefit of early access publishing through digital object identifier, also known as e-pub ahead of print. This feature will allow electronic access of the manuscript content as soon as the production team at WK has formatted the accepted article content for publishing. This information may become available to the reader up to 90 days before actual issue release. Time to print is an important metric in staying abreast of cutting edge literature, and this feature will clearly bring value to all users of the journal.

Additional added benefits associated with the recent digitization include improved access to previous issues to all subscribers, the ability to include larger diagrams, figures, appendices, and other materials that might assist the reader in comprehension of the material presented or to support the writing in a supplemental digital content (SDC) format. With SDC, you will notice a hyperlink embedded within the manuscript, that when clicked, will open a separate screen with that content. This allows us, as editors, to include materials within the article that previously may have been cumbersome or cost prohibitive to include in paper format.

For those authors who have not submitted a manuscript to Journal of Physical Therapy Education recently, you will notice a new editorial review platform from WK is now in place. The ScholarOne review platform worked well for us for many years, but “it is time to start something new” as suggested by Eckhart. All authors with remaining manuscripts in the ScholarOne system have been notified of our discontinuance of the system and advised to transfer all materials to the new Editorial Manager system. All authors will need to register with the Editorial Manager system, as the old login and password credentials associated with the ScholarOne site will no longer be recognized.

The final change we ask everyone to trust in the magic of new beginnings is in the option authors will choose with any new submission as to whether they desire the manuscript be published as “open access.” When uploading a new submission, authors must determine whether open access publishing is desired. The concept of open access publishing is relatively new to our world in physical therapy education. The service, provided as an option for any submitted manuscript, allows the author to pay forward for open access of their published material. This option will allow public access to any published material, maximizing article visibility by negating the requirement for that article to be available only to subscribing members of the journal. Such is the case in some areas of funded research that the article describing the study and outcomes be made publicly available for all to read. This option, when chosen by the author, allows the journal to be an outlet for this funded research. All standard practices of blinded peer-review and determination for acceptance remain in place with both open access and standard publishing. Please don't confuse the open access concept with that of the recent phenomenon of “predatory publishing.” Chad Cook gave a very enlightening description of the perils associated with this predatory practice in his 2017 The Journal of orthopaedic and sports physical therapy editorial entitled, Predatory Journals: The Worst Thing in Publishing, Ever.1 The open access option of Journal of Physical Therapy Education is not FREE ACCESS, as is generally associated with the predatory wolves of publishing.

It is true that it was time to start something new and trust the magic of new beginnings at Journal of Physical Therapy Education. The magic of new beginnings has been found in our new publisher, LWW-WK, and we as editors couldn't be more pleased. The support provided to assist us making the journal the absolute best it can be has been phenomenal, and we have every reason to believe that this will remain to be the case. Our friends at WK are a welcome addition to our team and continue to make the future of the journal even brighter.
