Spotlight On ...

FIGURE Mark Barabas, BS, DHA, has been a hospital executive for more than 20 years. He is the Chief Operating Officer of Mercy Suburban Hospital in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and is a member of the editorial board of JONA's Healthcare, Law, Ethics, and Regulation. He has authored several articles on the subject of Conversion Foundations Regulatory Approval and the choice small hospitals have between nonprofit and for-profit ownership. His leadership in guiding a financially distressed hospital through the regulatory approval process and transfer of ownership to a for-profit basis with the establishment of a conversion foundation won him the prestigious AOHA award of merit in 1999. His humorous look at the outplacement process, working with recruiters, and dealing with the trials and tribulations of a job search are drawn from personal experience and the experiences of his outplacement colleagues from the offices of Right Management Consultants in Lancaster, Pa.
