The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) will offer two of its acclaimed courses, October 19-20, 2019, in Charlotte, N.C., at the Charlotte Marriott City Center Hotel.

The Medical Review Officer (MRO) Course, a 1.5 day course offers current and aspiring medical review officers (MROs) an opportunity to increase and update their knowledge and familiarity with changes in substance abuse testing and federal regulations affecting the role of MROs. The Medical Review Officer Certification Council will hold its certifying examination following the ACOEM MRO course. The Occupational Medicine Board Review (OMBR), is a 1.5 day course which prepares physicians for the certifying examination provided by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM). ACOEM was recently informed of the passing of former Board member Dr. Mary Brothers and past president Dr. George Franck.

Mary E. Brothers, MD, MPH, FACOEM, age 69, former owner of Midwest Occupational Medicine in Kansas City, Mo., died February 5, 2019. A past member of the ACOEM Board of Directors (2002-2005), Dr. Brothers received her MD and MPH from the University of Kansas. After completing her training as a surgery resident at the Leavenworth VA Hospital, Dr. Brothers spent much of her career working with her father, Paul J. Centner, MD, in their OM practice in Kansas City. Dr. Brothers later acquired the practice from her father and established it as Midwest Occupational Medicine, retiring in 2008. She was certified by ABPM in occupational medicine, and was also a certified MRO and FAA medical examiner.

A member of ACOEM since 1980, Dr. Brothers was elevated to Fellowship in 1987. In addition to her service on the Board, Dr. Brothers was an active member of the Ethics Committee and the Work Fitness/ Disability Evaluation Section. She was also elected to the ACOEM Board of Directors and served as a director from 2002 to 2005. In addition, Dr. Brothers was an active member of the Great Plains College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, serving that component as president (1985-1986), and as a delegate to the ACOEM House of Delegates.

George H. Franck, MD, MPH, FACOEM, of Winston-Salem, N.C., ACOEM past president (1984-1985) and retired Corporate Medical Director for AT&T, died February 25, 2019, at age 88. Dr. Franck received his MD from Indiana University, and his MPH from the University of Michigan, where he also completed his residency in occupational medicine. He was certified by ABPM in occupational medicine.

Dr. Franck had a long and distinguished career as a physician and medical specialist in occupational medicine, working as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, Medical Director for Western Electric Company, Corporate Medical Director for Ohio Bell Telephone Company, Corporate Medical Director for American Bell, Corporate Medical Director for AT&T, Corporate Medical Director for New Jersey Bell Telephone Company, Associate Professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Medical Director of the Bowman Gray/Baptist Hospital Employee Health Services.

An active member of ACOEM for more than 60 years, Dr. Franck joined the College in 1958 and was elevated to Fellowship in 1965. In addition to his service as president, Dr. Franck was a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer. He was also an active member of the Georgia Occupational Medical Association and was that component's president from 1968 to 1969. Dr. Franck also served ACOEM as the College's representative to AMA Section Council on Preventive Medicine. His contributions to the College were gratefully acknowledged in 1992 when he received ACOEM's 1992 Kehoe Award of Merit (now the Excellence in Education or Research in OEM Award), and again in 2008 when ACOEM bestowed upon him the Meritorious Service Award, for his “tireless support of the College through his service as president and long-term member of the Board of Directors, and as ACOEM's spokesperson and liaison to the American Medical Association (AMA).”
