The Western Occupational and Environmental Medical Association (WOEMA) held its 60th Annual Western Occupational Health Conference (WOHC) in Las Vegas, Nev., September 15-17, 2016. During the conference, WOEMA presented two annual awards, the Jean Spencer Felton Scientific Writing Award and the Rutherford T. Johnstone Award.
Pamela Hymel, MD, MPH, FACOEM, was presented with the Jean Spencer Felton Scientific Writing Award. This award is presented annually to a WOEMA member who has contributed significantly to the body of knowledge in the field of occupational and environmental medicine (OEM). Dr. Hymel was cited for her extensive publications on occupational health and productivity.
Dr. Hymel received her MD from Louisiana State University in 1983, and her MPH from Tulane University in 1979. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM), certified in occupational medicine. She joined ACOEM in 1986 and was elevated to fellowship in 1997. Dr. Hymel is Past President of WOEMA (2001) and also Past President of ACOEM (2009-2010). She is Chief Medical Officer for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in Anaheim, Calif.
Paul Papanek, MD, MPH, FACOEM, received the Rutherford T. Johnstone Award, presented annually to a WOEMA member who has made significant contributions to OEM.
Dr. Papanek received his MD from UC San Diego and his MPH from UC Los Angeles. He is certified by the ABPM in occupational medicine. Dr. Papanek joined ACOEM in 1992 and was elevated to fellowship in 2009. He is a current member of the ACOEM Board of Directors and Past President of WOEMA (2010). Dr. Papanek is the Public Health Medical Officer for Cal/OSHA, Torrance, Calif.
Also, at the Annual Business Meeting, the new Board of Directors were announced. Taking office were: President Robert Blink, MD, FACOEM; 2nd Vice President, Erik Won, DO, FACOEM; and Secretary/Newsletter Editor, Troy Ross, MD, was elected. Two new directors, Sheri Belafsky, MD, FACOEM, and Rupali Das, MD, FACOEM, were also installed.
Jolene Mitchell, DO, MOH, has joined the staffat Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater County in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Dr. Mitchell is a Student/ Resident member of ACOEM.
Dr. Mitchell received her medical degree from the University of Pikeville Kentucky College Of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed a 4-year residency in occupational and environmental medicine at the University of Utah – Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine. While in residency training at the University of Utah, Dr. Mitchell also completed her Masters of Occupational Health.
