Clinical significance: This is the first known quantitative study that determined factors associated with stressful healthcare provider interactions. When workers feel stressed in healthcare consultations, return to work was less likely. Findings demonstrate the importance of understanding why these interactions were stressful, to enable stress-reducing interventions to improve return to work outcomes.
