Today's healthcare climate demands that staff orientation to a few facility be done quickly and with few disruptions to patient care. Nursing staff development specialists are well positioned to lead this process. Their expertise in program design, implementation and evalution, problem solving and communication skills, and ability to view the learning needs of hospital staff holistically are vital to a successful facility move. This article will describe the opening of a new 150-bed inpatient facility in a large acute rehabilitiation centre. The principles used by the Nursing Staff Development Department in this new facility orientation process can be applied in multiple health care settings. © Lippincott-Raven Publishers.
