Although nurses emphasize individualization of patient teaching, and certainly consider adult education principles, the inclusion of cognitive learning style within the usual referral forms may enhance assessments in all types of health care settings. There is a strong challenge to staff development educators to whom the practicing nurse looks for help to develop new skills as the need arises.
Nurses can rapidly implement teaching plans and make recommendations for future referrals. Improved educational techniques can increase patient self-confidence, competence, and their quality of life. It can also reduce the number of visits to outpatient clinics, doctors' offices, and hospital readmissions.
