Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) is an autonomous organization, established in 1983 on the pattern of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The main motive was to provide superspeciality medical facilities in Bihar, which was almost negligible in the state at that time.
IGIMS is a tertiary care medical college & superspeciality hospital and the campus is spread over a large area of about 133 acre, located in the heart of city of Patna. The institute is serving to the needy patients of Bihar and the nearby zone by providing clinical services of international standard.
It has annual intake of 100 MBBS students and is providing training, research and various educational programme of highest standard to the postgraduate/ postdoctoral courses (like M.D, M.Ch/D.M & Ph.D) in various disciplines. IGIMS has emerged as a medical institute of excellence in the region by producing best medical graduates, postgraduates and super-specialists for the country. It has been included in the list of the universities maintained in the University Grant Commission.
Apart from imparting education and training to medical students, constant endeavor is made to carry out quality research in order to cope with the rapid advancements in medical science and technology. The institute has its own multidisciplinary research unit (MRU) and institutional ethical committee to ensure the maintenance of quality of research and trials.
