Purposes The aims of this study were to find and compare the effects of aromatherapy essential oils (EO) inhalation in laboratory based experiment.
Methods This study was the secondary analysis from two randomized controlled trials. The subjects of this study were the normotensive healthy adults. The Inhaled EO in first study were Lavender and Ylangylang as a balancing oil and parasympathetic oil in aromatherapy, and the EO in Second study were Lemon and Rosemary as a sympathetic oils in aromatherapy. Subjects inhaled slowly for 3 minutes from 10 cm distance from their nose.
Results The SBP(F = 5.054, p = .008), DBP(F = 3.884, p = .024) and sympathetic nerve activity(F = 11.322, p < .001) in Lavender and Ylangylang experimental group were decreased after inhalation of EO. However BP in Lemon and Rosemary group didn’t be significantly different after inhalation. But sympathetic nerve activity(F = 3.781, p = .027) was significantly increased after inhalation of Lemon and Rosemary.
Conclusions The possibility of blood pressure reduction of EO was different as a kind of aromatherapy essential oils. In conclusion, the inhalation of aromatherapy essential oil as a kind of parasympathetic oils will be possibly effective to decrease the BP and sympathetic nerve activity, but the inhalation of aromatherapy EO as a kind of sympathetic oils will be not effective to decrease the BP and will be effective to increase the sympathetic nerve activity.
