The objective of this study was to test the feasibility of a novel quality-improvement (QI) program designed to incorporate multiple robotic surgical sub-specialties in one health care system. A robotic surgery quality assessment program was developed by The Ohio State University College of Medicine (OSUMC) in conjunction with The Ohio State University Medical Center Quality Improvement and Operations Department. A retrospective review of cases was performed using data interrogated from the OSUMC Information Warehouse from January 2007 through August 2009. Robotic surgery cases (n=2200) were assessed for operative times, length of stay (LOS), conversions, returns to surgery, readmissions and cancellations as potential quality indicators. An actionable and reproducible framework for the quality measurement and assessment of a multidisciplinary and interdepartmental robotic surgery program was successfully completed demonstrating areas for improvement opportunities. This report supports that standard quality indicators can be applied to multiple specialties within a health care system to develop a useful quality tracking and assessment tool in the highly specialized area of robotic surgery.

Iahn Gonsenhauser is a second-year medical student at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Prior to medical school he received a BA in Psychology/Neuroscience from Syracuse University and his MBA from Case Western Reserve University, where he worked for 6 years in biomedical research. This past summer he completed an internship with the OSU Medical Center department of quality improvement and operations in which a measurement and assessment protocol was developed to monitor quality and improvement within the robotic surgery program at OSUMC. Following that experience he founded the OSU chapter of the IHI Open School and is currently developing student-driven quality improvement initiatives.
Ronney Abaza, MD, is currently the most experienced robotic surgeon in the state of Ohio across all surgical specialties and is among the top five surgeons in the country in the number of robotic procedures he performs. Unlike most surgeons who offer robotic urologic procedures, Dr. Abaza's practice is dedicated solely to robotic surgery, and he typically performs 10 or more robotic surgeries weekly, with usually eight or more robotic prostatectomies weekly for prostate cancer. Dr. Abaza has numerous publications including papers on robotic surgery, prostate, and bladder cancer, and published the first ever robotic surgery for adrenal cancer in 2008 and the first ever robotic surgery for kidney cancers invading the vena cava in 2010. Dr. Abaza frequently serves as faculty for educational courses and as a moderator or course director for programs at the annual meetings of various national and international medical societies.
Hagop Mekhjian's, MD, current academic appointments include The Ohio State University College of Medicine; Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine & Public Health, The Ohio State University; and Professor, Department of Hospital Health Services Management and Policy, College of Medicine, The Ohio State University. His current administrative positions include Chief Medical Officer, The Ohio State University Medical Center and Senior Associate Vice President for Health Sciences, The Ohio State University. He also served as Director of the NIH Training Program, Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine from 1973 to 1974; and as Director of the Gastroenterology Diagnostic Laboratories at The Ohio State University College of Medicine from 1981 to 1985. Dr. Mekhjian is the recipient of over 20 research grant awards on which he was the Principal Investigator, and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers and articles, and given over 44 abstracts and presentations at national meetings. He also served as the founding president of the Central Ohio Chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, Inc. from 1996 to 1997; Chapter president of the American College of Gastroenterology from 1992 to 1994; Chairman of the Biomedical Sciences Human Subjects Review Committee at The Ohio State University from 1979 to 1984; Steering Committee, National Cooperative Gallstone Study from 1977 to 1983; Steering Committee, National Cooperative Crohn's Disease Study from 1972 to 1984. Dr. Mekhjian has been listed in The Best Doctors in America since 1998. He is a member of the AOA honor society and honorary alumni of the Ohio State University Masters in Health Administration program. Additionally he has received an outstanding teaching award from the Alumni Association. He chairs the Medical Staff Administrative Committee at the Ohio State University Medical Center.
Susan Moffatt-Bruce, MD, PhD, is a cardiothoracic surgeon, assistant professor of surgery, and assistant professor of molecular virology, immunology, and medical genetics at The Ohio State Medical Center. Dr. Moffatt-Bruce earned her medical degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, Canada, and her doctorate from the University of Cambridge in the UK. She completed her residency in general surgery at Dalhousie University and her residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Stanford University. Dr. Moffatt-Bruce's research has been focused on transplant immunology. Her clinical interests include lung transplant, heart transplant, transplant outcomes, and thoracic oncology. In 2009, Dr. Moffatt-Bruce received The Ohio State University College of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award for the Department of Surgery.
